Travel secrets - part 1

It was a cold and pristine night when our plane touched down in Ushuaia, which prides itself on being la ciudad más austral del mundo. Home to approximately 60,000 Argentinians, the southernmost city in the world is largely a quiet, peaceful place where days seem to go on endlessly, and heaven seems to meet earth. I recall being struck by the tartness of the air and an almost eerie stillness that belied Ushuaia's past as a prison centre for serious criminals.

Despite it being close to midnight, the sky remained a defiant shade of orange, which we admired on our taxi ride to our accommodations for the night: a delightful cottage with much-welcomed heating and cheery scented candles. On a lark, we ran outside in T-shirts and shorts, and were greeted by a most awesome view of the setting sun. A friendly local pointed us to a vantage point over the Beagle Channel, where we could capture the best photographs. Each of us was immersed in quiet reverie as we bid the sun goodnight.
