diamonds
Interesting/ Amusing convo today, after celebrating my dear housemate's 25th... we are standing around playing with this naughty laser pointer that Sy got Yf and talking about his (failed) plans to get a bride by 25.
Yf: Then I need to get a diamond right.
Me: Aiyah, don't need diamonds la. Just the promise of a lifetime.
Yf: -Only-??
Haha. Which I think highlights a social phenomena of which I've witnessed too many cases of recently. In this age of 'paper plate' (ie. consumable) relationships, people are all too willing to give up on their friends/bf/gf when differences arise. Even marriage is fast losing its value: what was once one of the most significant events in one's life can now be annulled with seemingly little cost, time and repercussions. Call me idealist, but I believe many issues can be resolved given sufficient time for learning, communication and compromise. It saddens me that people are becoming more instant-grat and less in it for the long haul, that they aren't bothering to (quoting Tim Gunn) 'make it work' anymore.
Which brings us back to diamonds: I think their true appeal lies in what they embody - permanence, resilience, brilliance --> qualities women would like to see in their men! Because it is woman's nature to seek security and validation in her relationships, women tend to 'invest emotionally' in relationships, and often wind up disappointed in guys who don't (or can't) give her the same commitment - Eve's earthly curse.
Or at least, a diamond represents a heavy cost, a sacrifice on the man's part. And who doesn't want to know that a guy would give up 1.5/3/suitably ginormous number months' salary for you to wear a (shiny, beautiful) rock on your finger? We all desire to be sought after and presents do show that one is wanted. Pardon the generalisations, but I do believe this is true (let me know what you think!).
What's my point in all this talk about diamonds? I guess for girls it's not to covet bling as mere status symbols to show off how much your guy loves you (we're worth so much more than that! and dude, we can buy our own). And to guys, don't give a lady a diamond unless you hope to last as long as the diamond does :)
[waiting for the pic]
Blue cheesecake! Happy birthday Yifeng.
