what fools we mortals be
Late last night my pump got stuck in prime and refused to work properly. Not to mention, in my haste I neglected to remove the infusion set before priming and ended giving myself a huge -UNKNOWN- dose of insulin. Battery and set changes did not work, and the wireless chose that moment to give problems so I couldn't get to the Minimed website to troubleshoot... there is no 24-hour pump service in Singapore (because there are <80 ppl on this thing here), and US helpline put me on hold for over 10 minutes before I gave up. No one in my family seemed to really realise what a big problem it was, so I had to fight through a haze of sleep and hypoglycemia with my sis screaming at me to turn off the lights and my mum trying to get me to drink her vile celery juice (!). In the end I decided there was nothing to do but wait til morning and call the hospital and my pump supplier pronto.
ME (lying defeated on bed): Eh, Jesus. No one to call, call on you lor. Why lidat! I -need- to get rid of this pump problem soon please. In fact, just get rid of the pump altogether!
GOD: Ok no prob. Chillax, go sleep.
ME: Easy for you to say! Anyway, if I go into coma and die before morning, I'm gonna find you in heaven...
Hilarious, on recall. But I fell asleep with an actual worry I might not wake up... Clearly I was ill-prepared for the eventuality of a pump breakdown (we should not put our trust in any earthly thing)! It served as a good, stark reminder that I don't have it altogether, at least not where my diabetes is concerned. Do not want to experience that again.
