Tradition... tradition!
Today we had a meeting for Citylights, the bigass event of 2006 where SAMSU is presenting Beauty World... This musical featuring the cabaret scene of Singapore was performed in 1988 and 1998, i.e. we are redoing something very ANCIENT.
Then my parents decided to celebrate their wedding anniversary by revisiting the restaurant where they held their wedding dinner - with both daughters in tow. We had a la carte-buffet (The concept is extremely amusing. The buffet was for the most part unstocked and the a ala carte dishes came at 10 min intervals on tiny little plates. This entry isn't about food though (phew), just wanted to say how scary the buffet monster situation is that it warrants large signs "Any wastage will be charged as a la carte".) So anyway my parents fell into conversation with the assistant manager, how they ate there in 1978 and how he started work there in 1984, and how time passes very fast. Yes indeed.
Of course both parties were penultimately pleased when they discovered we were all Hainanese - apparently my dad recognised it right away (huh, intuitive kin selection)... cue talk about Hainanese restaurants being the best and how they used to proliferate in the Katong foodies' region. It was kinda sweet, and I must say I am proud of our round-faced bulldog-nosed heritage. Even more so, seeing that chicken rice is most widely recognised as our nation's signature dish...
I think I need some Hainanese classes.
